Bullying - Un-American or an American Tradition ?

.
Here is a link to a fascinating project by the Center for Civil Education which invited students from around the country to submit their messages on the subject of bullying via artwork. They've made a quilt-like collage of them for you to explore. Click on a tile to see it full size. All grades are represented, and the messages are very diverse. Which do you agree with ? Which to you disagree with ? Which poster would you like to see hung on the walls at Harmon ? Why ?

What you may experience at school isn't all that different from what different groups have experienced in American society throughout our history. As we study the Civil War and Reconstruction, think about the obstacles that were put before African Americans, Women, Immigrants... and Children -both officially and unofficially where the result was that these groups were treated as 2nd class citizens or worse. Think about all those who witnessed discrimination- and remained silent... bystanders who minded their own business and didn't take a stand. Think about those bystanders who had the courage to intervene. Think about how your life confronts you with obstacles and opportunities that aren't so different from those faced by our predecessors. We tend to practice democracy simlilarly to how we live. Keep that in mind too as you continue to work towards Mock Congress.
